J.Costa is a Spanish manufacturer that produces scooter variators. Ten years ago they introduced a completely new type of variator. This variator differs from the traditional variators because the commonly used variator roller weights were replaced by gliding weights. This unique system is completely developed by J.Costa. Just as spectacular as this system are the advantages and performance this new technique produces. An increased power on the entire power band, better acceleration, less vibrations and faster throttle response. Dips in the power curve are part of history. Each variator J.Costa produces is specifically developed for and tested on the concerning model. This guarantees an excellent performance.
The revolutionary J.Costa variator permits a considerably faster acceleration at the lower revs regime offering a stronger torque all along the power curve. Its structure is very simple and straightforward, never the less more efficient and with better performance than traditional variators. Starting from a structure similar to traditional ones, the cross-sectional variator has a different external plate, bell and weights.
There are no slides, no rolls.
Differently from the traditional cylindrical rolls, these weights are shaped like capsules. The plate of the pulley has holes inclined toward the outside where the weights are hosted. When the bell rotates the centrifugal force pushes the weights against the plate, therefore changing the diameter of the surface where the belt travels.

J. Costa Vario are made for scooters for a standard set-up.
If the scooter is not standard the variator might not function perfectly.By using other gliding weights (heavier) a perfect set-up can still be achieved.
